Alan Howarth, Baron Howarth of Newport
It is with great sadness that Norfolk Community Law Service records the passing of Alan Howarth, Baron Howarth of Newport, who died on 10 September 2025 and had been our patron since 2019.
Alan Howarth dedicated his life to public service, serving as a Member of Parliament from 1983 to 2005, then in the House of Lords from 2005 until his death. His political journey — first as a Conservative, then as a Labour peer — reflected his evolving commitment to fairness, inclusion, and social justice.
David Powles, chief executive of NCLS, said: “Lord Howarth was a tremendous advocate for access to justice and people’s right to be heard and we were incredibly honoured to have him as our patron.
“He would often speak passionately in Parliament about NCLS and the work we do, but more importantly to highlight the failings that mean so many people miss out on legal representation.
“It was testament to his deep belief in and dedication to our cause that even in his later years, whilst very ill, we would speak regularly so he could be kept updated on the latest developments at the charity. He will be very sadly missed.”
